Humble Robotics, which markets itself as Humble, is a San Francisco startup building a cab-less, fully electric, autonomous Class 8 freight truck called the Humble Hauler. Founded in 2025 and out of stealth in April 2026 with a $24 million seed round, the company is designing a ground-up vehicle with no cab, steering wheel, or pedals, aimed at short-haul dock-to-dock freight: the repetitive container moves between warehouses, rail yards, and seaports rather than long-haul highway routes. The company is pre-commercial, with one prototype built and no paying customers or deployments.

The pitch rests on rethinking the truck rather than retrofitting one. Most autonomous-trucking companies bolt a sensor-and-compute stack onto a conventional diesel tractor built for a human driver. Humble instead integrates the tractor, the trailer interface, the electric powertrain, and the autonomy into a single purpose-built platform. Removing the cab and the diesel driveline, the company says, makes the vehicle roughly 20% lighter than a comparable tractor-trailer, which it argues means more payload per trip and lower energy use. Neither resolves the harder questions: whether a cab-less heavy truck can win regulatory approval, and whether short-haul autonomous freight can be made to pay. The approach

Humble's central design choice is to remove the human entirely rather than design around one. A conventional Class 8 tractor devotes a large share of its structure, weight, and cost to the cab, the controls, and the safety systems a driver requires. Starting from a cab-less platform lets Humble repackage that space and weight into payload and batteries, and shape the vehicle around its sensors and computers instead of a windshield and a seat. The company describes the result as a modular, lower-cost platform able to support more than one vehicle configuration.

The second choice is where to point that vehicle first. Long-haul autonomous trucking, the model pursued by Aurora and by Cohen's former employer Waabi, targets thousands of miles of interstate driving between distribution hubs. Humble aims instead at short, repetitive, low-speed routes: drayage-style moves shuttling containers between a port or rail yard and nearby warehouses. Those runs are geographically bounded, operate at yard and surface-street speeds rather than highway speeds, and return to the same docks repeatedly, which makes the autonomy problem more tractable and the operating domain easier to validate. The prototype is specified at roughly 200 miles of range and about 55 miles per hour, figures consistent with that focus rather than long-haul cruising.

For perception, Humble uses a fused camera, LiDAR, and radar suite for 360-degree coverage, paired with vision-language-action models, the class of AI increasingly common in robotics that maps sensor inputs to driving decisions. The vehicle is designed for Level 4 autonomy, meaning it is intended to drive itself without human intervention inside a defined operating area. Funding & investors

Humble emerged from stealth on April 21, 2026, with a $24 million seed round led by Eclipse Ventures, the Palo Alto firm that invests in physical industries such as manufacturing, logistics, and transportation and that recently raised $1.3 billion across two new funds to back physical-AI startups. Energy Impact Partners, a climate and energy venture firm, also took part, along with unnamed additional investors and industry advisers. It is the company's only disclosed round, and Humble has not published a valuation.

Jiten Behl, a partner at Eclipse, has said the effort will not take a billion dollars but an order of magnitude less than that, a notably modest figure for autonomous trucking and a direct consequence of the short-haul, lower-speed design. Proceeds are earmarked for continued vehicle development, expanding the autonomy stack, early manufacturing, and launching first pilots. That lean plan is central to the company's story, and it also means Humble has far less capital behind it than the long-haul players it gets measured against.

Leadership & team

Humble's founder and chief executive is Eyal Cohen, a two-time founder whose career spans autonomous driving, electric vehicles, and logistics. He worked on Otto, the self-driving-truck company Fortune credits with the first autonomous freight delivery by semi-truck in 2016, later ran hardware at the autonomous-trucking company Waabi, and co-founded SparkAI, which he sold to John Deere in 2023. Regulation & labor

Regulation is the gating factor for any driverless heavy truck, and it is moving. In April 2026 the California DMV lifted a long-standing ban on testing autonomous vehicles over 10,001 pounds, on strict terms: heavy-duty AVs must begin testing with a human safety driver on board and complete 500,000 miles of testing at each certification stage. Humble, which had earlier looked at Texas, said the change shifted its focus back to its home state, with the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach as an early target.

A cab-less truck faces a harder and later approval than one that removes the driver but keeps the controls. A vehicle with no steering wheel, pedals, or cab offers no fallback for a human to take over, and regulators have historically treated that as a higher bar. The UC Davis transportation researcher Dan Sperling has said approval for such a design is probably going to take a little longer. Cohen has met with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and a federal Self Drive Act of 2026 was introduced in February, and no framework specific to cab-less heavy trucks is settled.

Labor opposition is organized and explicit. The Teamsters in California, which says it has about 250,000 members, has vowed to fight the DMV's decision, calling driverless heavy-duty trucks reckless. California employs more than 130,000 truck drivers, and the displacement of those jobs is central to the political resistance any autonomous-freight rollout in the state will meet.

Market & competition

Humble is targeting U.S. truck freight, an industry Fortune puts at roughly $906 billion citing the American Trucking Associations. Within it, the autonomous slice is still small and early. The immediate opportunity Humble is chasing, short-haul port and rail drayage, is attractive because the routes are fixed and bounded, and it is also a fragmented, price-sensitive corner of trucking.

The competitive field is crowded and better funded. Aurora Innovation runs a hub-to-hub driverless long-haul model and has begun commercial driverless operations in Texas, Kodiak works within fixed launch-and-landing zones, and Waabi, Cohen's former employer, is pursuing autonomous long-haul. Those companies keep a conventional cab and target the highway. The closest analog to Humble's cab-less electric approach is the Swedish company Einride, which builds a cab-less electric pod for similar short-haul and yard duty. Humble's wager is that a ground-up electric, cab-less design aimed at dock-to-dock work fits near-term autonomy better than retrofitting diesel highway trucks.

Key considerations

Humble is pre-commercial. It has one prototype, no paying customers, no disclosed revenue, and fewer than 50 employees. Every performance number, the roughly 200-mile range, the 55-mile-per-hour top speed, the 20% weight saving, is a company target or prototype specification rather than a result measured in service. The distance between a working prototype and a fleet that hauls freight profitably has ended many autonomous-vehicle companies.

The cab-less design is both the differentiator and the largest single risk. A truck with no controls cannot fall back on a human, so it has to clear a regulatory and safety bar no U.S. framework has yet defined for heavy trucks, while satisfying California's 500,000-mile-per-stage testing regime. That approval could take years and is not guaranteed.

The autonomous-trucking sector has a hard record. Well-funded companies including Starsky Robotics, Embark, and most prominently TuSimple raised large sums and never reached durable commercial operation. Autonomy is capital-intensive and slow, and Humble's roughly $24 million is small next to the billions its larger rivals have consumed. Even with a leaner short-haul design, the company will likely need to raise substantially more to reach scale.

Humble also competes against better-capitalized rivals and organized labor opposition, and it has not shown how it will monetize the vehicle. The short-haul drayage niche it has chosen is defensible on the autonomy side and is a low-margin, fragmented market on the commercial side. Whether a cab-less electric truck can be built, approved, deployed, and sold profitably in that niche is entirely unproven, and the company remains an early-stage bet on a team and a thesis.
