Overview

Tesla is an electric vehicle and clean energy company headquartered in Austin, Texas. It is the world's most valuable automaker by market capitalization and the leading seller of battery-electric vehicles globally. The company designs, manufactures, and sells electric vehicles, battery energy storage systems, solar panels, solar roof tiles, and related products and services.

Tesla is led by CEO Elon Musk, with Vaibhav Taneja as chief financial officer since 2023 and Robyn Denholm as board chair. The company operates manufacturing facilities ("Gigafactories") in Fremont, California; Austin, Texas; Shanghai, China; Berlin, Germany; and Buffalo, New York, and is building a Tesla Semi factory in Nevada and a semiconductor fabrication plant in Austin. Tesla's vehicle lineup includes the Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck, and the Cybercab, which entered production at Gigafactory Texas during the second quarter of 2026. The Model S and Model X production lines at Fremont were decommissioned in 2026 to make room for Optimus robot manufacturing. The Model Y has been the world's best-selling vehicle across all powertrains in recent years.

Tesla is in an unusual position for a company of its size and valuation: its revenue is growing again while its profitability is falling sharply. The second quarter of 2026, reported on July 22, set records for both revenue and vehicle deliveries, yet operating income fell 57% year-over-year to $398 million, a 1.4% operating margin, and free cash flow was negative $1.09 billion. Two forces explain most of the gap. Operating expenses rose 47% as Tesla spent on AI infrastructure, Optimus, and the stock compensation attached to Musk's 2025 award, with full-year 2026 capital expenditure guided to roughly $25 billion. And the near-pure-margin revenue Tesla earned from selling regulatory credits to other automakers is disappearing, for reasons of federal policy rather than competition.

Business segments

AutomotiveFY2025: $69.5B, -10% | Q2 2026: $20.5B, +23%
The Automotive segment includes design, manufacturing, sales, and leasing of electric vehicles, as well as regulatory credit sales. It remains Tesla's largest business at $69.5 billion in FY2025, down 10% from $77.1 billion, of which vehicle sales were $65.8 billion, regulatory credits $2.0 billion, and leasing $1.7 billion. Deliveries fell 8.6% in 2025 to 1,636,129 vehicles, the second consecutive annual decline, and BYD passed Tesla in global battery-electric sales. That trend reversed in 2026: Tesla delivered 358,023 vehicles in the first quarter and a record 480,126 in the second, up 25% year-over-year. Battery pack capacity, in Tesla's own words, "remains the limiting factor on ramping our vehicle production globally." Tesla continues to invest heavily in Full Self-Driving (FSD) software and autonomous vehicle technology, which management describes as the primary long-term value driver; active FSD subscriptions reached 1.48 million by the end of the second quarter of 2026, and more than 55% of new North American deliveries included an FSD subscription.

Tesla's energy segment designs, manufactures, installs, and sells solar energy systems, battery energy storage products (Powerwall for residential, Megapack for commercial, industrial, and utility use), and related services. FY2025 revenue rose 27% to $12.8 billion, making it 13% of company revenue, up from 10% the year before, and deployments reached an all-time high of 46.7 GWh, up roughly 48% from 31.4 GWh. The fourth quarter of 2025 was a record at 14.2 GWh. Tesla's stated rationale has shifted with the market: the FY2025 annual report frames Megapack as a response to AI-driven load growth, arguing that storage increases utilization of existing generation and transmission rather than simply firming renewables.Growth has not been smooth. Deployments fell to 8.8 GWh in the first quarter of 2026 and segment revenue dropped 12% year-over-year, before recovering to 13.5 GWh and $3.14 billion in the second quarter, which Tesla described as the business having "returned to growth." The first quarter's roughly 39.5% energy gross margin included an estimated $250 million one-time tariff benefit and should not be read as a run rate, and the second quarter carried a warranty charge tied to a vendor cell issue. On product, Tesla unveiled Megapack 3 and Megablock in September 2025: Megapack 3 holds about 5 MWh per unit, and a Megablock pre-integrates four of them with a transformer and switchgear at roughly 20 MWh, which Tesla claims cuts installation time about 23% and construction cost by up to 40%. Installed capacity stands at 40 GWh of Megapack in Lathrop, California, 20 GWh in Shanghai, and more than 6 GWh of Powerwall in Nevada, with a Texas Megapack factory in commissioning and production planned before the end of 2026. Tesla is also building LFP cell production in Nevada for storage products and refining lithium in Texas.

Includes non-warranty vehicle servicing, used vehicle sales, Supercharger network revenue, retail merchandise, insurance, and other service-related revenue. Revenue grew 19% in FY2025 to $12.5 billion and accelerated to $4.6 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 50% year-over-year, with gross profit reaching a record $648 million. Growth here tracks the installed vehicle base, which passed 9.7 million cumulative deliveries, and the Supercharger network, which reached 8,704 stations and 82,357 connectors and is open to non-Tesla EVs under the NACS standard.

Financial performance

FY2024 revenue was $97.7 billion, roughly flat year-over-year, with growth in energy and services offset by automotive declines, and net income attributable to common stockholders was $7.09 billion. FY2025 revenue fell 3% to $94.8 billion, Tesla's first annual revenue decline, and net income dropped 46% to $3.79 billion. Diluted earnings per share were $1.08.

The pressure is at the operating line rather than the gross line, which is worth stating precisely because the two are often conflated. Gross margin was 18.0% in FY2025 against 17.9% in FY2024, essentially unchanged and well below the mid-20s of FY2022. Operating income, by contrast, fell to $4.36 billion, a 4.6% margin, from $7.08 billion and 7.2%. The gap between the two is operating expense: research and development and selling, general and administrative costs have grown faster than revenue as Tesla funds AI, autonomy, and robotics. Operating cash flow held up at $14.75 billion in FY2025, close to the prior year's $14.92 billion, and capital expenditure was $8.53 billion, down from $11.34 billion in FY2024, leaving roughly $6.2 billion of free cash flow.

That balance broke in 2026. Second-quarter revenue reached a record $28.24 billion, up 26%, on record deliveries of 480,126 vehicles, yet operating income fell 57% to $398 million and the operating margin narrowed to 1.4%. Operating expenses rose 47% to $4.35 billion, capital expenditure more than doubled to $5.79 billion, and free cash flow turned negative at $1.09 billion after a positive $1.44 billion in the first quarter. Tesla has guided to roughly $25 billion of capital expenditure for 2026 and describes this as its largest period of investment. Cash, equivalents, and short-term investments stood at $43.5 billion at the end of the quarter.

The regulatory credit collapse

For more than a decade Tesla sold regulatory compliance credits to other automakers, revenue that carried almost no associated cost and therefore fell nearly intact to the bottom line. That business is ending, and not because of competition. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed July 4, 2025, reset the civil penalty for failing to meet federal corporate average fuel economy standards to zero. With no penalty for non-compliance, other manufacturers have little reason to buy anyone's credits, and the market for them has largely stopped functioning. The same legislation terminated the $7,500 clean vehicle tax credit for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025.

The numbers show how quickly this has moved. Automotive regulatory credit revenue was $2.76 billion in FY2024, fell 28% to $1.99 billion in FY2025, and came to $146 million in the second quarter of 2026, down 67% from $439 million a year earlier. For scale, that quarter's entire GAAP operating income was $398 million. The tax credit's expiry also distorted the delivery record: buyers pulled purchases forward into a record third quarter of 2025 at 497,099 vehicles, and fourth-quarter deliveries then fell 16% year-over-year. Both effects are policy-driven and neither reverses on its own.

Autonomy and robotics

Tesla launched a robotaxi service in Austin in June 2025, initially with safety monitors in the vehicles, and began limited rides without an in-car monitor in January 2026. As of the second-quarter 2026 report the service is operating without supervision in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, runs in the San Francisco Bay Area with a safety driver under a California permit, and has preparations underway in Phoenix and Las Vegas. Cybercab, the purpose-built vehicle intended as the fleet's workhorse, entered production at Gigafactory Texas during the quarter. Optimus production lines are being installed at Fremont, on the floor space freed by retiring the Model S and X lines, with production anticipated during 2026. Tesla does not disclose robotaxi fleet size, and independent trackers put the number of driverless vehicles at roughly twenty, so the eight-metro footprint describes coverage rather than scale.

Federal safety regulators are examining the underlying software while this expansion proceeds. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating whether FSD violates traffic laws, including running red lights, across roughly 2.88 million vehicles, and in March 2026 escalated a separate inquiry into reduced-visibility performance to an Engineering Analysis covering about 3.2 million FSD-equipped vehicles. An Engineering Analysis is the stage that precedes a recall demand. Seventeen robotaxi incidents involving the autonomous driving system were reported to the agency between July 2025 and March 2026.

Strategy & outlook

Tesla's stated strategy is increasingly centered on AI and autonomy. Management describes Full Self-Driving, the Cybercab robotaxi, and the Optimus humanoid robot as the primary drivers of the company's future valuation, and the 2026 spending plan reflects that: roughly $25 billion of capital expenditure, AI training capacity expanding through the year, a semiconductor fabrication plant under construction in Austin to secure long-term logic and memory supply, and Optimus lines being installed at Fremont. Tesla's own outlook expects hardware profits to be joined over time by AI, software, and fleet-based profits. The near-term cost of that transition is visible in the numbers: the investment is being made now and the returns are prospective.

In energy, Tesla is scaling Megapack production to meet demand from utilities, grid operators, and data center developers, positioning the segment as a growth line independent of vehicle sales, with the Texas Megapack factory due to start production in 2026 and Megapack 3 and Megablock replacing the earlier product. The Supercharger network, now the dominant DC fast-charging standard in North America after the industry's adoption of NACS, is a growing services revenue stream. Tesla Semi is targeted for production in 2026 at a new Nevada factory, with 4680 cell output cited as the constraint on ramping both Semi and Cybercab.

Key considerations

Tesla's automotive margins remain under pressure from competition, particularly from Chinese manufacturers, from lower average selling prices, and from the loss of regulatory credit revenue. BYD passed Tesla in global battery-electric sales in 2025 and remained ahead in the second quarter of 2026 at 557,090 vehicles against Tesla's 480,126, though the gap narrowed from roughly 220,000 units a year earlier to about 77,000. European registrations fell around 27% in 2025, a decline widely attributed by analysts to a combination of model transition and brand damage from Musk's political activity, though causation there is argued rather than measured. That trend has since reversed: European registrations reached 170,351 in the first half of 2026, up about 55% year-over-year, so a straightforward account of European decline no longer holds. Cybertruck remains a disappointment against its original volume ambitions, with 2025 sales of roughly 20,000 units.

Tesla's valuation, roughly $1.3 trillion against $94.8 billion of FY2025 revenue and $3.79 billion of net income, prices in expectations for autonomy, robotaxi, and robotics businesses that currently generate little disclosed revenue. Shares fell sharply on July 23, 2026 after the second-quarter profit miss. The gap between what the vehicle and energy businesses earn today and what the valuation implies is the central question for any assessment of the company, and it widened rather than narrowed over the past year.

Governance and executive compensation are a distinct consideration. Shareholders approved a new CEO performance award on November 6, 2025 with more than 75% of votes cast in favor, granting Musk up to roughly 424 million shares across twelve tranches over ten years. Each tranche requires both a market capitalization milestone and an operational one; the full award would require Tesla to reach an $8.5 trillion market capitalization alongside targets including 20 million cumulative vehicle deliveries, 10 million active FSD subscriptions, one million Optimus robots delivered, and one million robotaxis in commercial operation. Tesla identifies the award's stock compensation expense as a contributor to rising operating costs. Separately, the Delaware Supreme Court reinstated Musk's rescinded 2018 award on December 19, 2025, ending long-running litigation that had prompted Tesla's move of its state of incorporation to Texas. Tesla also remains exposed to tariffs, trade policy, and shifting EV subsidy regimes across its major markets.
