Overview

Trane Technologies is one of the world's leading climate control companies, manufacturing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for commercial buildings, data centers, and residences, as well as transport refrigeration systems for trucks, trailers, and shipping containers. The company was created in 2020 when Ingersoll Rand spun off its climate segment, keeping the Trane and Thermo King brands, to form a standalone public company. It is incorporated in Ireland but operationally headquartered in Davidson, North Carolina, and is led by Chair and CEO Dave Regnery, with Chris Kuehn as chief financial officer.

Trane reports through three geographic segments: Americas, which at $17.2 billion of FY2025 revenue is roughly 80% of the company; EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) at $2.8 billion; and Asia Pacific at $1.4 billion. Its brands, Trane for commercial and residential HVAC, American Standard for residential, and Thermo King for transport refrigeration, are among the most recognized in the industry, with transport refrigeration running as a product line across all three segments rather than as a separate reporting unit. Trane has grown from a steady industrial compounder into a high-growth company positioned around the data center buildout and building electrification, a shift that has re-rated its stock toward a growth-industrial multiple.

Business segments

Commercial HVAC: Americaslargest growth driver
Trane's commercial HVAC business serves office buildings, hospitals, universities, industrial facilities, and, increasingly, data centers. The product range includes large chillers for central cooling plants, rooftop units, variable refrigerant flow systems, and the associated controls and building automation. Commercial HVAC has historically been a long-cycle business tied to construction and renovation, but the data center buildout has added a demand driver less correlated with traditional commercial real estate. Trane does not disclose data center revenue or name its hyperscale customers, but the pull is visible in orders: Americas commercial HVAC bookings rose more than 35% in the fourth quarter of 2025 and roughly 40% in the first quarter of 2026, and Americas Applied Solutions bookings grew more than 100% for three consecutive quarters through early 2026. Management describes data centers as the primary force behind that growth, and notes that the demand extends well beyond the small portion of its sales force that calls on data center accounts directly.
Residential HVAC and heat pumpssoftening after credit repeal
Trane and American Standard heat pumps use refrigerant cycles to move heat rather than generate it through combustion, which makes them several times more energy efficient than gas furnaces for space heating. The near-term picture has weakened, however. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act terminated the Section 25C residential energy efficiency tax credit, including its $2,000 heat pump provision, effective December 31, 2025, removing a subsidy the profile of this business had leaned on. Americas residential revenue fell in the mid single digits year-over-year in the first quarter of 2026. The longer-run case for heat pumps now rests less on federal incentives and more on equipment replacement demand, the ongoing refrigerant transition, and electrification mandates in Europe and parts of the United States, which remain in place even as the federal consumer credit lapses.
Thermo King: transport refrigerationproduct line across all three segments
Thermo King is the global leader in transport refrigeration, the systems that keep perishable cargo cold inside trucks, trailers, rail cars, and shipping containers. Founded in 1938, it has the highest market share of any transport refrigeration brand globally. Trane does not report Thermo King as a standalone segment or disclose its revenue; transport refrigeration runs as a product line within each geographic segment. The business is driven by food supply chain volume, cold chain integrity requirements, and the transition from diesel refrigeration units to electric and hybrid units as fleet operators face emissions rules in Europe and California. It has been a softer market recently: management flagged challenging transport refrigeration conditions through 2025, with Americas transport revenue up only low single digits into early 2026, even as its electric units position it for the diesel bans spreading across urban delivery zones.

The data center opportunity

The AI-driven buildout of data center capacity has become one of the most powerful demand drivers in Trane's history. Data centers are extraordinarily energy-intensive: a large hyperscale campus can require hundreds of megawatts of cooling capacity, with cooling accounting for a substantial share of total data center energy use. As AI workloads, which are more thermally intense than traditional cloud computing, increase, cooling requirements per rack have risen sharply. Direct-to-chip liquid cooling is gaining share for the highest-density AI compute, while air-cooled perimeter and precision systems remain essential for the broader environment, and Trane now sells into both.

In February 2026 Trane closed the acquisition of the digital business of Stellar Energy, a Jacksonville, Florida provider of modular chiller plants, central utility plants, and coolant distribution units for liquid-cooled data centers, adding roughly 700 employees. The deal moved Trane directly into liquid-to-chip cooling rather than leaving that segment to specialists. Management expects Stellar to contribute about $500 million of revenue in 2026 and to grow toward a $1 billion business within two to three years, and raised the company's capital expenditure target to fund expanded production for it in Florida and Texas. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Trane does not publish data center revenue, a data center growth rate, or a share-of-revenue figure, and it does not name its data center customers. What it discloses is the effect on orders: record enterprise bookings, Americas commercial HVAC bookings up roughly 40% in the first quarter of 2026, and a backlog that grew from $7.8 billion at the end of 2025 to a record $10.7 billion three months later, roughly a third of that jump from acquisitions including Stellar. The company's chiller technology suits the large central cooling plants that hyperscale operators build, and its data center customers are large, creditworthy buyers running multi-site, multi-year procurement programs.

Building electrification and the refrigerant transition

Two regulatory-driven transitions are reshaping the HVAC industry simultaneously, and Trane is positioned as a beneficiary of both.

The first is building electrification. As governments in Europe and parts of the United States mandate or incentivize the replacement of gas heating with electric heat pumps, the addressable market for heat pump HVAC grows. That case became more nuanced in the United States when the federal Section 25C consumer credit lapsed at the end of 2025, but Europe's phaseout of new gas boiler installations in many jurisdictions and the sheer size of the aging installed base still support a long replacement cycle, and Trane's broad heat pump line across commercial and residential applications positions it to capture it.

The second is the phasedown of high-GWP (global warming potential) refrigerants. Under the U.S. AIM Act and the EPA's Technology Transitions Rule, manufacturers could no longer produce most residential and light commercial HVAC equipment using the high-GWP refrigerant R-410A after January 1, 2025, shifting new systems to lower-GWP A2L refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32, with restrictions on installing high-GWP systems following in 2026. The transition forces equipment with different system designs, which drives a replacement cycle Trane is positioned to serve, but it has not been frictionless: an industry-wide shortage of R-454B and of the cylinders that hold it drove sharp price increases and supplier surcharges through 2025, a cost and supply risk that runs alongside the demand opportunity.

Financial performance

Trane Technologies has delivered consistent revenue growth and margin expansion since the 2020 spin-off. FY2025 revenue was $21.3 billion, up 7% reported and 6% organic, driven by commercial HVAC demand in the Americas and continued price realization, and moderated by weaker residential and transport refrigeration markets. Adjusted operating margin reached 18.5% and adjusted EBITDA margin 20.1%, among the highest in the diversified industrial sector, reflecting the pricing power of the Trane and Thermo King brands and the aftermarket services content, roughly a third of revenue, that generates recurring streams from parts, maintenance contracts, and building automation. Adjusted continuing EPS was $13.06, up 16%, and free cash flow was $2.9 billion at 98% conversion.

The forward signal is in the order book. Full-year 2025 bookings were a record $22.6 billion, and backlog reached a record $10.7 billion after the first quarter of 2026, up more than 30% in a single quarter. On the strength of that, Trane raised its full-year 2026 guidance in April to roughly 9.5% revenue growth and adjusted EPS of $14.75 to $14.95, and lifted its annualized dividend 12% to $4.20 per share. The company returned $2.3 billion to shareholders in 2025 through dividends and buybacks and has continued an active repurchase program. Its stock has been one of the strongest performers in the industrial sector since the spin-off, re-rated from a traditional HVAC multiple toward a growth-industrial one as investors weighed the data center and electrification demand.

Strategy & outlook

CEO Dave Regnery has articulated a strategy centered on three secular growth themes: the global energy transition (heat pumps, building electrification), the digital transformation of buildings (smart controls, building automation, energy management software), and the cold chain expansion driven by food security and pharmaceutical supply chains. All three are long-cycle structural tailwinds rather than short-term cyclical surges.

Trane's services and parts business, the aftermarket revenue from maintaining its large installed base of HVAC equipment, provides a base of recurring, high-margin revenue that is relatively insensitive to new construction cycles and now runs at about a third of enterprise revenue, growing at a low-teens rate since the 2020 spin-off. As the installed base grows and building automation extends service contract duration and scope, the services business becomes a larger share of the total. The company has also been investing in digital capabilities such as remote monitoring, predictive maintenance, and energy optimization software that extend the offering beyond hardware and deepen customer relationships.

Key considerations

Trane's stock trades at a large premium to the broader industrial sector, reflecting the data center and electrification growth narratives. Any deceleration in data center construction, slowdown in heat pump adoption, or miss on earnings could trigger a meaningful de-rating. The premium valuation requires consistent execution and continued demand momentum to sustain.

The residential HVAC business is cyclically sensitive. Rising mortgage rates reduce new home construction and inhibit replacement demand from homeowners reluctant to spend in an uncertain economic environment. While the commercial business provides a large offset, the residential segment (approximately 15 to 20% of total revenue) can be a drag in a housing market downturn.

The refrigerant transition carries execution risk. Moving an entire portfolio to new refrigerant formulations while managing supply chain qualification, technician training, and customer education is a multi-year operational challenge, and the R-454B shortages of 2025 show how supply and price disruption can accompany it. Missteps such as delayed product availability, quality issues with new systems, or service complications could allow competitors to gain share during the transition window.

A legacy liability sits in the background. Two indirect Trane subsidiaries, Aldrich Pump and Murray Boiler, filed for Chapter 11 in 2020 to resolve asbestos-related claims through a bankruptcy trust, which stayed the underlying lawsuits. The proceedings remain unresolved, and while the structure is designed to cap and channel the exposure, the ultimate cost and timing of a confirmed plan are not yet settled.
