Overview
Valar Atomics is an El Segundo, California nuclear startup founded in 2023 by its CEO, Isaiah Taylor. Taylor, born in 1999, left high school at 16 to work as a programmer and started the company at 24. Valar designs high-temperature gas reactors that use TRISO fuel, helium coolant, and a graphite moderator, and intends to manufacture them on a production line rather than build them as bespoke construction projects. In August 2026 it raised $1 billion in a round led by Sequoia Capital partner Shaun Maguire, who joined the board, at a valuation Bloomberg reported at roughly $6 billion.
The company's strategic premise separates it from most of its peers. Taylor has argued that electricity is a poor product because it cannot be stored or moved easily, so Valar targets what a reactor can make besides electrons: process heat for industry, hydrogen through the sulfur-iodine thermochemical cycle, and synthetic hydrocarbon fuels through Fischer-Tropsch synthesis using captured carbon dioxide. The company describes these as grid-independent products. Data center power is the exception and has become the commercial focus most visible in its recent announcements.
What Valar has demonstrated is early, and a genuine first in a narrow sense. Its Ward 250 test reactor in Utah achieved criticality on June 18, 2026, becoming the second advanced reactor to do so under the Department of Energy's Reactor Pilot Program and the first DOE-authorized reactor built and operated outside the national laboratory system. Two weeks later it produced enough electricity to run a single desktop computer. The gap between that demonstration and the 30-megawatt facility the company is studying with Nvidia is the central question for any assessment of it.
The technology
Ward 250 and the DOE Reactor Pilot Program
Ward 250 is a Generation IV high-temperature gas reactor with a 5 MWe design rating, built at the Utah San Rafael Energy Research Center in the state's Castle Country region. The name refers to the United States semiquincentennial: the DOE Reactor Pilot Program, established under Executive Order 14301, set a target of criticality before July 4, 2026. Valar broke ground in Utah in September 2025. In February 2026 the reactor was flown to the site aboard three C-17 Globemaster III aircraft in a joint Department of Energy and Department of War operation called Operation Windlord, described as the first military airlift of a nuclear reactor.
The reactor went critical at about 16:30 MDT on June 18, 2026, confirmed by the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy. This was zero-power criticality, meaning the fission chain reaction became self-sustaining while the core stayed near ambient conditions with no working fluid removing heat and no measurable energy output. It demonstrates that the reactor physics behave as designed, and it is the step that precedes raising power. Taylor said at the time that nine months earlier the site had been empty. Energy Secretary Chris Wright called the result a revolutionary moment for advanced nuclear. Some accounts describe the milestone as full-power criticality; the DOE, World Nuclear News, NucNet and the American Nuclear Society all describe it as zero-power, which is consistent with what followed.
On July 1, 2026, Valar raised Ward 250 to roughly 100 kilowatts of thermal output and used it to generate electricity for the first time. Helium carried heat from the TRISO fuel to a thermoelectric generator, which converts a temperature gradient directly into current through the Seebeck effect without any turbine or steam cycle. That electricity ran an Nvidia DGX Spark, a desktop system built on the Blackwell architecture, which hosted a temporary website. It is the first time a next-generation reactor in the United States has powered a computer, and the quantity involved is very small: about 2% of the reactor's design rating, delivered through a conversion method chosen for simplicity rather than efficiency. Valar and Nvidia separately announced a joint feasibility study for a 30-megawatt waterless AI computing facility using closed-loop cooling. That facility is a study, not a project under construction.
Regulatory strategy
Valar has taken an unusually adversarial position toward its own regulator. The company is a plaintiff in litigation against the Nuclear Regulatory Commission challenging the 1956 Utilization Facility Rule, which requires a federal license for essentially any reactor. Valar argues that the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 limited NRC jurisdiction to facilities significant to the common defense and security or to public health and safety, and that the agency exceeded that limit by capturing reactors holding small quantities of nuclear material. The relief sought would exempt small test reactors from federal licensing and leave oversight to the states. Texas, Utah, and the reactor developer Last Energy filed related claims.
The practical consequence is that Valar's first uranium-bearing reactor is being built outside the United States. Ward One is a 100-kilowatt micro high-temperature gas reactor planned for the Philippines in partnership with the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute, using the 123 Agreement between the two countries as its legal framework. It is a proof-of-concept unit that will not connect to the grid or generate electricity. Reporting has associated the project with the University of the Philippines Diliman campus in Quezon City, though the company has not confirmed a final location. Meralco, the largest electricity distributor in the Philippines, has publicly discussed Valar as a candidate for a domestic small modular reactor program. Ward 250 in Utah proceeds under DOE authorization rather than an NRC license, which is what makes it the first DOE-authorized reactor operated outside a national laboratory.
Funding & investors
Valar emerged from stealth in February 2025 with $19 million and a pilot reactor site. A $130 million Series A followed in November 2025. Around April 2026 the company raised $450 million, split between $340 million of equity and $110 million of debt, at a $2 billion valuation. On August 3, 2026 it announced $1 billion in Series B equity led by Sequoia Capital, with Bloomberg reporting a $6 billion valuation. Co-investors named in that round include Apandion Capital, Atreides Management, Conviction, Dream Ventures, HOF Capital, Point72, Riot Ventures, Snowpoint Ventures, and Valor Equity Partners. A separate $200 million credit facility came from Erebor, J.P. Morgan, Crescent Cove, and Hercules Capital.
The rounds are listed individually because no source publishes a cumulative total, and summing disclosed rounds would produce a figure the company has not stated. The valuation trajectory is the more striking fact: roughly $2 billion in April 2026 to a reported $6 billion four months later, a tripling that followed the criticality milestone and the Nvidia demonstration rather than any revenue.
Key considerations
Valar has done something real and something small, and the distance between the two is unusually wide. Achieving criticality in roughly nine months on a greenfield site, under DOE authorization rather than an NRC license, is a genuine regulatory and engineering result that most advanced reactor developers have not matched. Generating electricity from that reactor, even a trickle through a thermoelectric generator, is a United States first for a next-generation design. Neither result establishes that the company can raise Ward 250 to its 5 MWe design rating, build a 30-megawatt facility, or manufacture reactors on a production line, which is what the $6 billion valuation prices.
The regulatory strategy carries its own risk. Operating under a DOE pilot authorization and building the first fueled unit overseas lets Valar move faster than the NRC pathway allows, but a commercial fleet serving American data centers will eventually need federal licensing, and the litigation seeking to avoid that has not been resolved. The hydrogen and synthetic fuel product lines, which are the company's stated reason for choosing a high-temperature design, remain entirely prospective.
Valar publishes no cost, efficiency, or delivered-energy figures, and none appear in credible independent sources, so this profile carries none. The company has not disclosed a current headcount; a figure of about 45 employees circulated before the recent rounds and should be treated as out of date.
