Overview
EVgo is one of the largest public electric vehicle fast charging networks in the United States, operating DC fast charging infrastructure exclusively at more than 1,200 locations across 47 states. The company was founded in 2010 and was an early mover in deploying high-powered public charging before EV adoption made such networks economically viable. EVgo went public in July 2021 via a SPAC merger with Climate Change Crisis Real Impact I Acquisition Corporation, a transaction that valued it at approximately $2.6 billion.
The company is led by CEO Badar Khan, who joined in late 2022 from NRG Energy. EVgo's network sits primarily in dense urban and suburban settings, at shopping centers, grocery stores, apartment complexes, and highway corridors, aimed at drivers who lack home charging or need a top-up on a long route. That positioning separates EVgo from Level 2 AC-focused competitors and from Tesla's Supercharger network, which was historically closed to non-Tesla vehicles.
The model is built around high-utilization DC fast charging. EVgo earns revenue mainly through per-session or per-kWh fees paid by drivers, supplemented by commercial agreements with automakers, most notably a long-term partnership with General Motors covering charging infrastructure for GM's Ultium EV platform. It also earns revenue from eXtend, a white-label service that lets fleet operators and third-party networks sell charging on EVgo hardware.

Financial performance
EVgo reported FY2025 revenue of approximately $384 million, up roughly 50% from $267 million in FY2024. Recurring charging network revenue reached $218 million, up 40%. Growth came from network expansion, ending 2025 with about 5,100 stalls, and from rising utilization of existing infrastructure as the U.S. EV fleet grew. FY2025 revenue also included a roughly $26 million non-recurring gain from a contract closeout, so underlying revenue was closer to $358 million.
EVgo crossed a milestone in 2025, reporting positive adjusted EBITDA of about $12 million for the full year and $24.9 million in the fourth quarter, a swing from roughly negative $33 million in 2024. Read it with the caveat: the same one-time contract closeout added about $24 million to adjusted EBITDA, so underlying profitability was closer to breakeven, which is why 2026 guidance for adjusted EBITDA spans negative $20 million to positive $20 million. The company remains unprofitable on a net basis, with the loss narrowing to $95.4 million in 2025 from $126.7 million in 2024. Substantial fixed costs, depreciation on charging infrastructure, network operations, and customer support are only partly offset by current utilization, and gross margins are thin because EVgo buys electricity at commercial rates and passes it through to drivers while absorbing network overhead.
The balance sheet reflects the capital intensity of building a charging network. EVgo ended 2025 with roughly $211 million of cash and equivalents and has said financing is in place through 2029 to deploy new stalls without raising additional equity. A large part of that is a Department of Energy loan facility: EVgo closed a $1.25 billion guaranteed loan from the DOE Loan Programs Office in December 2024, drew a first $75 million tranche in early 2025, and planned to fund roughly 7,500 new stalls with it. In April 2026 the facility was amended down to a $750 million maximum. EVgo framed the reduction as evidence it needed less government debt after raising private capital and as a way to remove a restrictive cash reserve, while at least one analyst cut its price target on the smaller facility. The two readings capture the real uncertainty around the company's funding and the broader charging build-out.
Strategy & outlook
EVgo's central priority is improving network utilization, pushing more kilowatt-hours through existing infrastructure before deploying significant new capital. Management argues that stalls added today will be used more heavily tomorrow as the fleet grows, and that the marginal economics of additional throughput through existing hardware are strongly favorable. The focus is siting quality: adding chargers where they will reach breakeven utilization sooner, rather than maximizing stall count.
The opening of the TeslaSupercharger network to non-Tesla vehicles, which began in 2023 under pressure from federal NEVI requirements and OEM deals, reshaped the competitive landscape. Tesla's network is the largest fast-charging network in the country, and its accessibility to all EVs makes it a well-funded, high-reliability competitor in EVgo's core market. EVgo has responded by emphasizing reliability, urban density, and its OEM partnerships, and has begun adding Tesla-standard NACS connectors across its own stalls.
Federal policy has turned from tailwind to headwind. The Federal Highway Administration froze the $5 billion NEVI charging program in February 2025; a coalition of states sued, and in January 2026 a federal court ruled the freeze unlawful and ordered funding restored, though deployment is slower and more contested than before. More consequential for demand, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act ended the federal EV purchase credits, up to $7,500 for new and $4,000 for used vehicles, for cars acquired after September 30, 2025, and the Section 30C credit for charging equipment lapses at the end of June 2026. Both subsidies had underpinned EV sales and charger economics. EVgo's long-term trajectory is a function of EV adoption: if the U.S. fleet keeps growing, network economics improve as utilization rises; if adoption stalls without the credits, the path to durable profitability lengthens.
Key considerations
Utilization is the key variable. A solar panel or wind turbine earns whenever the resource is available; a charging stall earns only when a car is plugged in. Rising throughput carried EVgo to adjusted-EBITDA breakeven in 2025, that result leaned partly on a one-time item, and net losses continue. Sustaining profitability depends on filling the network more consistently during peak hours as the fleet grows. A slowdown in EV adoption, now more likely with federal purchase credits gone, presses directly on the throughput the whole model rests on.
Reliability and uptime are existential brand issues. Multiple studies have found that a significant share of U.S. public chargers are out of service at any given time, which has frustrated drivers and slowed public charging adoption. EVgo has invested in network reliability and publishes uptime metrics that compare favorably to the industry average, and any high-profile failure damages both the brand and the case for public charging generally. Maintaining stall uptime is a cost driver and a competitive necessity at once.
The long-term competitive structure of the charging industry is genuinely uncertain. The market could consolidate around two or three large national networks, or fragment across utilities, automakers, retailers, and independents. EVgo's position as a publicly traded, OEM-partnered, pure-play DC fast charging operator gives it a clear identity and ties its fate to the EV adoption curve, the durability of its OEM relationships, and a policy environment that has become markedly less supportive. Execution against a competitive, capital-intensive market will decide whether the 2025 turn toward profitability holds.
